Salone Satellite 2014: professionalism for the future
Apr 24, 2014
Attentive visitors to the 2014 Milan Furniture Show could not miss the pavilion dedicated to emerging designers, who presented us with many surprises this year.
The official slogan of SaloneSatellite 2014 is 'Design, Innovation + Craftsmanship', because today the practice of 'do-it-yourself' is very common, with many similarities to craft production: limited edition, refined finishes, self-expression. From a designer's point of view, this is the starting point of the design world.

SaloneSatellite was created to give emerging designers the opportunity to present their artisanal or self-made work at the Milan Furniture Salon, where the world's most influential manufacturers hold the most exciting week of the year.

The advent of new technology and a new generation of designers has spurred the development of a new kind of craft production for people who not only know how to make things with their own hands but also use computers and other modern technology in their work. In short, it's the evolution of manual labour into digital labour.

We all know that digital technology has revolutionised photography, but it is also changing the world of design. Today anyone can become a photographer thanks to inexpensive handheld devices, and unfortunately this is the reason why the technical and artistic skills of a true photographer are at risk of being overlooked or lost altogether. Uliyan asks: does this mean that the ease with which digital design and 3D objects can be created and produced calls into question the role of the designer in this process?
The debate on this topic continues, and we will have faith in the young designers of SaloneSatellite, who have yet to surprise us with many novelties, and whose mission remains the same: to create the design of the future.
