Masiero: the classic spirit in modern interiors

Aug 28, 2017

The Euroluce 2017 lighting exhibition in Milan delighted us with an unusual interweaving of modernity and traditional classics. The focus of our attention – new collections of the brand Masiero, combining the luxury of ancient Italian palaces and impeccable modern technology.

Masiero has been in the lighting business for more than two decades and draws on the experience of Murano craftsmen and the classic Venetian tradition of glassmaking of the highest quality. In recent years, the classic spirit that characterises all of the brand's products has been infused with contemporary forms, reinterpreted and reinterpreted.

From this marriage of classic and modern, three new collections emerged from the company, which we saw at the Milan Forum: Raqam, Sound and Maria Teresa.

Raqam – is a truly unique range of chandeliers in a classic style. Translated from Arabic, the word means «embroidered pattern» which implies a variety of decorative forms that can be generated in interior design. In this project, the professionalism and experimental approach of renowned designer Marc Sadler meets the engineering skills of Masiero's team of technicians.

At the heart of Raqam's sophisticated and innovative collection are seven glass elements used in classic-style chandeliers equipped with LEDs. «Each of the seven elements is seen as a brick with which to build both a simple wall and an entire cathedral»– is a simple comparison that Mark Sadler uses when explaining the process and design power of the Raqam modular system, which harmoniously combines electronics, engineering, mechanics and scenography.

The Raqam collection – «s a new language based on proportion and harmony, which can be used to transform light, space and surfaces»– continues the designer. The idea behind the series is extremely flexible and allows for an infinite number of individual solutions for interiors.

Sound – is a unique collection of metal luminaires created in collaboration with Giovanni Battista Gianola, art director and designer and founder of the Argine design and visual communication studio in Treviso. He was inspired to create the Sound luminaires by a reflection on brass instruments, which gave the collection its name.

«I have always found it intriguing to be able to perceive things around us by using several senses simultaneously, – says the designer. – Sight and hearing, for example, light and sound. When we talk about design, we immediately think of the aesthetic form of an object, even if the sound it produces, while fulfilling its function, is an essential part of the object itself».

As conceived by Gianola, in the ceiling lights, sconces and floor lamps, Sound diffuses light and fills the surrounding space with its rhythm, sound form and soul of brass.

The Sound series belongs to the technic and industrial trend. At its heart – metal lampshade discs connected by curved tubes. The collection is characterised by solid shapes and bright colours, including gold and metallic pink.

The Maria Teresa collection – a luxury that is hard to describe. Glass, crystal, silk lampshades, sparkling crystals and threads of stones – all this splendour adorns sconces, pendant lights and majestic chandeliers for 50 or more lamps. The chandeliers are available in classic ecru as well as sapphire or lemon.

In search of new forms, the past and the future overlap and intertwine in a synthesis of refined elegance. Masiero uses Asfour crystal, Bohemia glass and sparkling Swarovski crystals for its chandeliers, sconces, floor lamps and pendant lights. The result is chandeliers with a strong identity that transcend minimalism – a touch of continuity and eclectic diversity is inherent in each piece.
